According to the operating manual for my '07 883 Sportster, it is supposed to be equipped with a switch that would allow me to start the engine in any gear. If it does have such a switch, its not working since I can only start it in neutral. Anyone know whether its a faulty switch or an error in the manual? Or are they referring to bikes other than the 883?
My '07 883 has the switch, and I can start it with the clutch pulled in. The switch is located where the lever pulls back against the switch housing on the handlebars, little rubber boot covers it. Could be the switch or a wire problem, don't know.
You can check fine details like that with an on-line parts website like this one. If you can't start in gear then you do have a switch and it is defective! If you didn't have that switch your starter would work in gear, even with the clutch fully engaged.
Have your handlebars been changed at some time, chrome handlebar switches been fitted, any other such mods? The switch can easily be damaged or the wiring trapped/damaged when messing around with such things. If you pull things apart to sort this out then get yourself a factory service manual first! Doing stuff blind is how problems like this can come about.
