Afternoon folks
2003 Sportster 1200
LAF drag pipes
Fresh oil change
New Harley plugs
Aftermarket Airfilter(not sure of brand)
Was running fine until today
started up fine and ran good until i got to the Main gate of my Base(Marine Corps Base) died at the gate wouldnt start back up could smell fuel, finally got it started and couldnt let off the gas or it would died, it was backfiring alot and blowing black smoke when i pulled into work it backfire and blew smoke out the air filter then died. It will idle with the choke on but it idles rough.
not very familiar with harleys but heres what ive noticed
noticed when i twist the throttle the slide is not going up but it is spitting fuel into the carb
i can lift the slide up and twist the throttle and the i cant think of the name but the piece beyond the slide opens and closes just fine
Yes threw the pipes sorry forgot to mention that.
I'm guessing someone took the carb apart before the screws on the bowl are all stripped and so are the top 4
Like people have said, definitely sounds like a carb issue, might be an opportunity to upgrade it to a makuni. then rebuild carb sell on EBay and get a few quid back.
Thanks for all the responses, I'm pretty decent with carbs built a quite a few dirt bikes, so I took the carb apart when I got home from work today, it's got a 170 and what looked like a 48 jet. I cleaned everything out and put it back together and still no idle it will run with the choke on but very rough and with a lot of back firing from both the exhaust and air filter. With the air filter off I can see fuel igniting in the carb.
Now for the makuni carb, what carb would you suggest?

I agree, broken diaphragm would be my first guess, too. If the butterfly valve behind the slide works, then vacuum isn't pulling the slide up - torn diaphragm most of the time.

I have had a couple of sportsters and I always had trouble with the standard HD carb, we have pretty cold winters but rarely snow, but its cold enough to cause a bit of carb icing in the HD carbs.
Have had no problems with my Makuni carb, and it does make the bike feel better on throttle.
