1200 custom will not start

When you say does not start what exactly happens, does the engine try to turn over.
what year is your bike.
The reason I ask is it could be a number of things based upon why your bike wont start and of course it matters a lot at what year it is.
When you turn the ignition does the idiot lights come on, neutral, oil light ect.

Also, check your kill switch, and if it's carbed, your petcock.

Your going to have to bare with me, as all my experience with Harley Davidson's are with Evo models, however I do own two Honda's with EFI so the principle is going to be the same, I have just had the same problem with a Honda Fireblade, which in the end involved me changing the whole main loom.
First question.
When you turn the ignition on, do you hear the fuel pump priming?.
Obviously this is with the kill switch turned to run.
