i paid ~$530 when it first launched. it has ruined everything else for me. the super smooth light zone transitions and adaptive cornering is something you have to ride to believe.
watch the cornering here:
the CD trubeam/ vision x vortex IS BRIGHTER...NO JOKE BRIGHTER...LIKE BOOM!!!! but, not a cool and smooth spread. it has HARD light zones and over the top, sledge hammer style output.. and no active cornering. i tried but, just like the 8690a more. if we are talking CD trubeam/ vision x vortex Vs. 8690>M<, then yes, CD trubeam/ vision x vortex win all day long, you just will not find a better light in the $300-400 rage that dumps this kind of light... that thing has SERIOUS OUTPUT. SERIOUSLY... MASSIVE... but that's the problem as well.
two or so pages of hem'n and haw'n...reasoning:

CD trubeam/ vision x vortex- no high/low adapter
CD trubeam/ vision x vortex- with high/low adapter
back to OP's question, anything is better than stock halogen..... just becareful... a failure at night could cost you a heluva lot more than a $400 light. i understand you just want the look though. again quite a few folks are running the the $50 sealed lights and are happy. in that range, i'd go with a led h4 rather than a sealed led:
