Default no crosshatching on handlebars?

the 2016 sportster 1200 custom comes from the factory not very custom, and with some pretty significant limitations, im ok with that as I got a good deal, love a sportster, and my 1992 finally wore out. that said....

im annoyed with the sound. different thread. sorry.

the handebars are not good for anyone. to remedy this, I needed about 7 inch rise, and a decent pullback. not easy to find. has anyone seen the weird risers on the 2016? this made the choice difficult, but I found the right ones. west end bars, 7 inch rise. they came in today, but look weird:

the bars are totally smooth. even where they should not be.

Im pretty sure they will move. what have you guys and girls done? I might take a hacksaw and make some crosshatches. perhaps electrical tape will work? someone said steel wool properly stretched out....screwgrab? anyone got any foolproof fixes for this obvious failing?

im sure west end did this to keep it pretty no matter what bike it was on, but i need this to work right the first time. any help is appreciated!!

This is what I did. Took a center punch and made my own knurling. The bars were 7-1/4" rise and they never moved a bit.

Go to your local skateboard shop. Ask for some scraps of griptape (they normally throw it away) cut into a couple small strips and stick them on the bars. BOOM!!

You could always consider buying a 'knurling tool' perhaps if you wish for a machine finish? You do not need a lathe if you have a large vice to clamp the tool in, you then rotate the bars within the tool. They must be available your side of the pond? It would of course probably get used once and dumped in the garage never to see the light of day again. Alternatively if there is a good machine shop near you they may be able to knurl it for you for minimal outlay?

What make the OP think the handlebars will move once clamped?

Have other co-members found this to happen?

My recollection from motocross back in the early years of 1970's was that handlebars were not knurled and they did not move...unless one crashed haha.

Else, "knurling tool" as mentioned above seems best.

What make the OP think the handlebars will move once clamped? ... I've seen a number of bars move in the clamps. I'd want mine knurled.

I'm guessing you haven't used those Knurling tools... those in the link won't work hand held. You need at least three contact points to be used hand-held...Like a Tubing Cutter (2 support wheels and 1 cutting wheel)

I hope he used an automatic (spring loaded) center punch...No Hammer needed

MX bars don't have much of a "Rise"...

more "Rise" = more leverage = easier to move bars in the clamps
