I just started riding a 02 883 Sportster.. I took it around the neighborhood and adjacent roads this week and when I pulled back into the driveway and my hand was very sore from either reaching for the clutch lever and/or a tight pull. Are there any options for different levers or tricks or adjustments that I can make to be able to enjoy my new ride.
and I seem to remember cammed levers being made but I cant find them. Ill add an edit if I find them. My suggestion (and because im a guy it might sound like I dont know the struggle, and I may not) but I would try riding it for a bit. if I was doing work and mine was sitting for a while when I get back on it my hand feels like my girlfriend was gone for the weekend. But it always comes back to feeling fine after a bit. Id say see if your grip strengthens.
However, that may be the worst advice. Just what I would try because the harley kit and the burly brand kit require digging into the primary to install it.
Harley's reduced effort kit does not fit a Sportster ... Muller does make Ramp kits that reduce the clutch pull ... the Muller kit runs in the $150 to $175 range ... J&P Cycles, Drag Specialties, and others handle them ... the Muller Kit replaces the stock ramps but still requires getting into the derby cover
In the meantime if/when you get those levers you/somebody can adjust the clutch cable for if you were doing a lot of slow moving , the lever would be closer the grip and much better for a smaller hand , that might be all you have to do
I adjust my clutch cables for what I like the "feel" not what H-D says
being your bike is an '02 I'm guessing the clutch cable hasn't been lubricated in a while ... you would be surprised what a difference simply lubing the cable would make as well
Yes strength might be a slight issue but it is also out of reach as well
I had the same issue learning to ride in the MSF class last year when they used Street 500. My left hand was swollen and hurt for days after. Now I have a '15 superlow and no issues at all. For me it wasn't the strength but the reach as well.
Good timing cause womenridersnow.com just posted this review on this type of adjustable clutch, so maybe look into that?
