Default Gears

Does anyone know how you check the gear oil on your bike. Looked through the manual but got utterly confused. I thought I read it should be changed every 10 grand but not 100% sure.

Check or change? FWIW I change mine every 15k and it still comes out clean. The next time out I'll change it at 20

Check I've never heard of being done. It won't use gear oil unless you have a leak. The interval is every 10k. Actually not bad at all to do. I just do motor oil every 5 then motor oil and primary every 10. They also say adjust clutch every 5 but it's never been odd so after a while I only adjust the clutch every 10k.

Edit: the only check you're going to be doing in there is on your chain. Even the clutch you don't check, you just zero it out and set it. As far as fluid to add just sear h the forum. Please don't reignite the great oil debate of 2015. Many lives were lost.

That's how I do it on my bike. Oil and filter every 5 and primary every 10. IIRC on Sportsters the trans and primary share the same oil so I would do that every 10.

Thanks guys. I'm just wondering how you know you have it full enough when you change it. Not even real sure where or how you fill it. I'm a total greeny learning as I go.

If you have reason to believe its low then drain and refill. Cheap insurance.

The drain plug is on the bottom, don't loosen the primary chain adjustment nut. The drain plug is next to it.

Replace the O-ring. They are reusable but again, cheap insurance

On the left side (if your sitting on it) there is a small round or oval cover with 2 star bolts. That's the primary chain inspection cover. Stick a funnel in there and pour in exactly 1qt of your preferred primary fluid.

Replace the inspection cover and you're done. Sit back and enjoy a cold one.

To check...

Level the bike.
Remove the derby cover.
Look for oil level to be at the base of the clutch basket teeth.
Manual has a diagram of the oil level to teeth.
For "insurance" buy a replacement derby o-ring...$2.50

Yet going this far into checking, might as well replace.
Not sure if the oil would leak into another chamber inside the engine.
Outside leaking would be obvious.

Good luck.

What manual are you referring to? The factory service manual has a section dedicated to changing trans oil, plus a maintenance schedule. Doesn't take that long to read it from cover to cover, so you know where everything is......
