Default front end sag

how much front end sag do the forks normally have? I bought a 2008 1200c trike conversion for the wife. The kit was installed when the bike was new. I recently jacked it up and realized the forks drop 2 inches under it's own weight when I let it down off the jack. I'm thinking it's a little too much or is that much normal? I'm thinking I may get progressive's heavy duty replacement kit or should I just get the standard duty? Or is there something better out there?

My new progressives eliminated just over an inch of sag compared to my 10 year old springs, here is the thread on installing them.

You want about 25%-33% of your total travel to be taken up when the rider sits on the bike (rider sag). That works for your average street ridden cruiser.

The stock front springs are soft as is. I imagine the trike kit added substantial weight. I'm thinking stiffer springs are in order.....no?

that's what i'm thinking. it's been a trike since 2008 and 19,000 miles ago. at most changing them can't hurt.

Normal sag should be around one third total travel. Unfortunately even H-D engineers don't seem to know this, as many of us have found out. My SuperLow, when new, sagged over 2" at the front, with total travel of around 4". There are two relatively ways of addressing this: simply add spacers above the fork springs, to raise the front and restore sag to around an inch or so (check total travel and divide by 3); install Race Tech single-rate springs to match your wife's weight and set sag as above. For spacer tube use thick-walled plastic water pipe and cut it with a proper pipe cutter, to get the ends square.

I ended up ordering progressive's standard weight springs and fresh oil. I was going to get the heavy duty one's but was afraid it would end up too stiff for her liking. for $100 it's got to be better than what she has now.

That kit comes with the plastic tube, so you can correctly set sag. If you go to their website you can see the installation instructions, while you wait for delivery!
