Default Belt Guard

I've got a '06 1200L and just had my 2nd. upper belt guard break. They both broke in the same place, right above the rear bolt hole. I was wondering if anybody has had this problem and if aftermarket guards might be stronger. The metal seems pretty hefty but hey, its a sportster and that means vibration.Thinking about using a couple of fender washers on the next one for a little added support.

Never had that problem because both of mine have been on a shelf in the garage since the first day I got the bike 11 years ago, and no never had a problem running without them.

I broke the original one on my 2013 XL1200C-

2013 xl1200c (my Bike)
60367-04 BELT GUARD 1 67.49

Looking at the new models in the showroom I noticed the mounting point looked different than mine and found this updated part number-

2016 1200C
60367-04A BELT GUARD 1 67.49

I also liked the looks of the 48 and Iron 883 belt guards

2016 Iron 883
60379-09A BELT GUARD 1 94.99
Buckshot round holes?

2016 48
60300115 BELT GUARD 1 75.99
Slotted

I ordered the 60300115 part number to get the slotted belt guard instead of the XL1200C stock solid belt guard.

Hopefully the photos below will show the differences (other than the slots in new one )

The old broken belt guard on top of the new one showing the rear mount point being wider:

The new belt guard showing where the bend is located :

The original belt guard showing the bend for the mount (it broke at the top of the mount point hole behind the rear shock mount)

Mine broke at around 7,000 miles. That's how I learned to carry zip ties. HD replaced it under warranty.

Zip ties....all these years and I never considered carrying those (for the car too).
Thank you.

Belt guard.
I recall one other thread on this guard breaking.
Updated part may have found the weakness.
Look to misalignment....belt or bolt hitting the guard, belt guard tabs on swingarm bent, passenger foot kicked the guard out of alignment, tire change issues. etc.
Hoping the upgraded part was the cure!

The upper belt guard on my son's '17 Iron broke where it attaches to the lower shock bolt. It appears that possibly the suspension bottomed out because there is a scuff mark on the top of the guard where it possibly struck the fender/frame rail. Maybe HD will replace it under warranty, maybe not... He doesn't remember hitting anything that hard though, and you'd think someone would remember that!
