Question backfire on starting

So the new-to-me '97 XL that I recently purchased often delivers a loud pop (aka "backfire) when starting. This can't be good. What are some of the most common reasons for backfire? I remember reading about this topic YEARS ago in American Iron, but cannot recall the details.

THANKS!

Exhaust leak....do you only have the pop when starting i.e. not when riding?

+1 on exhaust leak- but it could be alot of things too. Too large pilot jet- timing off- bad/fouled plugs.
change out the plugs- easy and cheap- see what happens then. Sorry- not the greatest answer.

So far, I've only heard it on start up, not while riding, but it does make an engine braking gurgle when I roll-off the throttle, and I've heard that is also not good. "backfire" is just easier to describe.

how to test for exhaust leak?

Changed plugs and plug cable and that did not solve it, but it needed to be done anyway... new to me bike = replace consumables, so this was good advice.

timing and/or jetting could make a lot of sense. the engine does not feel as well tuned as my previous sporty. It feels like it's got a soft spot early in the power curve, so my mechanic recommended a carb and timing tune-up anyway. hmmmmm... I'll keep you posted on that one RDHIGH.

thanks folks!

Common home methods are soapy water or candle flame.

header pipes are stock. Can I get those heat shields off without effecting the pipes and their connections to the engine, bike, and mufflers? what is the purpose of the heat shield anyway... do they effect engine performance in any way?

THANKS!

Heat shields are usually on with worm gear clamps. Yes you can take them off without disturbing any thing else. They are there because exhaust pipes are super hot- protects your boots and pants etc- and your header pipes will be very discolored from heat- heat shields are nice and shiny.
