Default Filling up without spilling

Is there a specific way to fill up the sportie/nightster without spilling on the tank? I filled it up for the first time today and it wasn't a successful fill up..i managed to spill on my tank. I wiped it down with soap/water from the gas station window washer bin. Do you guys have a method that you use to ensure that you don't spill gas on your tank?

First, get out a rag, i always carry one, or get a a paper towel from the dispenser if they have one( for washing windshields). Next remove the nozzel from the pump and point it down so any excess in the hose drains on the ground. Now, cover the end of the nozzel with your rag as you move it over and insert it into the tank. Fill tank with bike on the jiffy stand. When you are done slowly remove the nozzel from the tank and cover it again with the towel/rag before you drag the nozzel out and over the tank.

You've now completedRocket Science 101.

Thanks for the input Charley. It's a simple question and obviously a simple answer. I just wanted to know other riders' techniques to avoid fuel spill.

MJK, sorry i had the nerve to ask such a question.

Don't feel bad.

I've been filling tanks for quite a while.

I spilled some on mine a couple of weeks ago, with the same rag methodmentioned earlier.

I got a little distracted fromsome girl that was paying attention to me.Not only did I get gas on my tank, the girldroveaway before I could pay any attention to her.[sm=headbang.gif]

What Mr Steve failed to mention is here in CA the emission ***** require a spring loaded rubber boot on the nozzle,
if you try to use it like you would in a car it makes a mess on the bike. We also have restrictors in the filler necks of all vehicles making things that much more of a pain in the ***.

What I do is pull the boot back and stick just the tip of the nozzle in far enough to get gas in the tank and still watch the tank level. When near full I release the handle and leave the nozzle for a couple of seconds and I rarely get gas on the tank or bike.

Steve try posting some of your questions like this in Gen Harley chat, you'll get answers instead of people trying to mock you.

The cHarley tip about draining the nozzle is important. Don't know why people leave it full of gas but that is the one that will get you.

What I've been doing is paying close attention to the fuel level in the tank as I fill it up, when it gets close to the bottom of the filler neck in the tank I shut the pump off. I also dont pull the pump trigger more than halfway. Don't feel bad everyone of us (even the smart asses out there) have spilled gas all over their tanks at least once.

Good question. Here in California some stations have tighter boots than others. I have had best luck with Chervon stations.
