Stage 1 question
Would that mod provide suffecient exhaust flow to take advantage of the SE intake it has and the stage 1 flash? I know there are better systems out there but am thinking costs here. Plus I don't want it super loud, just enough to be heard by motorists with their radios on and windows up.
Also, will one of my mufflers have a cat converter in it? Mine is a 2007 XL1200L.
It depends where in the world your are as to whether the exhaust system will have cats or not.

1) The Harley flash is a download that catches "all" and not specific to your bike.
2) My '07 does not have cats, but you need to check yours.
3) The punching of your pipes has many threads of success.
4) There is also a technique to enlarge the many holes of the baffle itself.
Your are looking to spend $200 on a Harley flash and it may be that aftermarket tuners are the same price.
So do more research as the aftermarket units can dial into your specific bike.
If your punching does not work for you, then you can buy pipes and use the aftermarket tuner to re-tune with only
the pipes as additional costs.
Nothing's ever easy and straight forward uh?
Good luck in your decision.
Am not looking for the last ounce of power, actually just looking for a little better sound, and since the bike came (to me) with the SE air cleaner, I will need some sort of tune to run a free flowing exhaust. Less chance of issues down the road that way. I realize the aftermarket tuners are probably the best bang for the buck, but not if I cannot use it. I am already playing that game with my diesel truck.
if a retune were not necessary, I wouldn't bother. I like the thread of drilling out the baffle holes and reinserting the baffle. Just want enough volume to alert the cars near me as I approach.
The VIED gives you the option to adjust the mixture between 14.3-13.9:1, where the XIED is set at 13.8:1.
These are both very effective options and less expensive than the flash tune.
As far as our exhaust goes, once you remove your baffles I think you will find that you will end up loosing some low and mid range torque. You might want to consider a set of these Thunder Torque Inserts™ to gain back that power and torque and also get that deep tone that they provide. HERE is a write up of exactly how the TTIs work.

Both of these options together are still less than $150, and will still give you a huge Improvement over what you are currently running. Give us a call if you have any questions.

I didnt plan on keeping the baffles out just modifying them to flow a little better.
I will read up on it but can state from personal experience that I hear bikes before I see them. Besides I want to hear it more myself. Remember lane splitting is legal in CA and when traffic is rolling along at 10-15 mph its easy to gain a lot of ground and keep the engine from overheating. A little blip of the throttle keeps drivers aware they are out there.
