On SPORTSTERS, has anyone ever used detachable hard bags with a detachable sissy bar? Can both be mounted at the same time? Will be dealing with Viking bags and their detachable system, but any info might be helpful.
I just used the HD quick-release mounts between the saddle bag mounts and struts. I had a sissy and luggage rack (not the one on bike) that utilized the mounts.
Depending on which way your bags open, be sure there is enough space between the struts and bags so the lids are able to open.
HD sissy and HD luggage rack with quick release mounts.
This is my mod thread which will have most of the mods I did to my sporty, as well as posts for members to share their baggers. Many different style bags....a few with similar set up made for touring.. Mine was made for daily 20 mile work commute but I am now retired so I sold the sporty, and bought a shovelhead
I just modified the installation to include the HD quick release mounts so the bags are actually supposed to be closer to the struts. I am sure you can use any kind of bag mounts as long as it is stable.
My bags were mounted to the same bolt as the HD quick release docking hardware. Here is a pic of the HD docking hardware that looks like the type used for my applicattion. https://www.harley-davidson.com/stor...01-5396406b--1
If you viewed the Tsukayu video on the installation of the mounts, the docking hardware went between the bag mounts and the struts....I just used slightly longer bolts. The bags did not require bottom support brackets.
BUT keep in mind the further out you go i.e. the longer the bolt, the less stable the bags will be.....which is why I made it so when the sissy or luggage rack were mounted, the bags could not be opened. I needed to remove the sissy/rack if I wanted to get in the bag....a little inconvenient but outweighed the versatility I wanted....which is why I normally use a fender mounted luggage rack (in pic above) and not the HD rack when bags were on. Normally used the HD rack and sissy without bags.
Ok got it thanks. I already have the HD mounts on mone. When the bags get here I vuess I will have to get creative. I hope to keep access to all bags without removing anything. Hope.

I must've missed it, what bags are you getting?
Seems like if they opened from the rear like on the VTX video you'd have
alot more "access" without removing other accessories. Having the
latch on the external side of the bag seems like it would require more
"offset" space for the lid to open without hitting the strut or fender.
