Adding power circuit for USB charger
I would like to add a power outlet up near the speedo, preferably clamped to the handle bars.
The bike came with a wire with a plug at the end to attach a trickle charger from the dealer.
My concern, as I have found with my 2007 Softail back in the states, that you can cause a lot
of grief plugging into the power in the wrong place on these bikes with the full electronic control
systems.
My question is, would this line to trickle charge is likely to be hooked directly to the battery so I
am thinking it may be outside the monitored circuits for this control system on this bike. Of
course I would connect into these leads under the seat somewhere, and fuse that wire as well.
I really would like to have power to charge the phone and possibly run a standalone GPS unit.
I think there is an accessory power supply supplied on most of the bikes, at least my Softail
has one. But for the interest of staying out of all the monitored circuits that run the bike, I
would like to stay as an outside circuit.
Anyone think this connection to the battery charger leads would be noticed by the control system?
the seat is off, I am going to lay in the wiring to support the charger. If the wiring for the trickle charger
is directly connected to the battery, I will use that. If it is wired into the fuse block or other connectors,
I will do as you did. Go directly onto the battery.
With the seemingly nearly constant list of things causing problems, and the common first choice of
solutions being "clean and tighten the battery connections" I would like to avoid adding anything
under the wire lugs at the battery itself. But I will get a look mid week, when I hope my parts are
finally coming in.
Thanks again!
I am not happy as the extension has nowhere to be placed so it is neat. It will have to be placed as best you can under the left side cover.
It will however be a switched supply.

included with it. Avoiding the CAN bus is pretty much what I would like to avoid.
In my family my dad was the electronics wiz until he convinced my younger brother to take up the trade. He tried his best to convince
me, but my first few exposures to the electronics side were "shocking" in more ways than one!! So I sidelined into Chemistry and
Engineering. Some 55 years ago or so.... ha ha ha. Still ping up my brother every time I mess something up here, even being so
far away. Skype is wonderful, and his knowledge is DEEP, and has kept me in good shape for some time. He recommends not to
test the sensitivity of the CAN system, and use a direct approach to the battery. My experience with the Softail leads me to the
same conclusion...
I will if I have to, but I will likely let HD shop do it if that is how it must be. But I will try the direct way now first.. lets see..
Follow up next week I hope.
It looks like the wire I was going to use is behind 2 fuses. The 40 amp main and then the 15 amp listed as P&A.
I will also discuss with the HD mechanical guy when I pick up my parts this week about his thoughts as to where I should
connect. But going in with the tender connection should be outside the prying eyes of the computer that watches the
systems so it should still work....

The Best of Harley-Davidson for Lifelong Riders
This is the model I am considering for the handle bar mounted USB and Lighter socket. It also has volt meter.
