I posted this in the transmission forum but never got any replies i thought I'd try it here.
70 sportster with right side shift. A buddy broke the shift pawl thinking the shifter was the rear brake. I replaced the shift pawl.
Problem: when i try to install the pawl carrier the rollers don't line up. The top one is always out further than the bottom one. I have included a picture of what i mean. The part i am pointing to is the roller. I assume it needs to be in line with the bottom roller but it never is.
The tower need to bolted flush with the trap door. I see a space there . . . BAD. You can'e just blindly replace trans parts on an Ironhead Sportster and assume it going to be OK. Gotta get a Factory Service Manual, READ IT till ya understand it and get to work. Follow the FSM clearances and you will be good. Here's my latest Ironhead Sportster, completely restored.
I have read the manual unfortunately they aren't really like the new manuals. They are pretty vague to be honest. I've put a lot of time into it and i may have the gears out of alignment i finally got it flush.
But can you shift your gears with an allen wrench? Mine doesn't shift really it just moves the gears a little not really shifting.

Are you turn the gears while you shift it. On a nonsyncro transmission that drives with dogs, gears or like on a 6 speed shift cones with the 5 or 6 huge drive dogs need to turn to drop in.

Ironhead 4 speeds are way different the the Evo 4 or 5 speed. You need to check the clearances between the gears like the FSM says. If ya can't get them in tolerance, change the forks (variable offsets available.) TURN the main shaft while you shift through the gears. If ya make it through all gears and neutral it's all good. While it's on the bench, check for burrs on the shift cam and clean them off.
