Hi! I want to put "Custom Tapered Sport Luggage Rack, Part Number 50300030" on my XL1200T 2019.
But required detachable side plates (Part Number 53913-04) look like asking for something above, and this structure will look incomplete without it.
But I don't like those backrests. I would prefer a low bar behind the seat, like on Yamaha SR 400, to set it between the seat and luggage rack.
Is there some aftermarket backrest bars of this kind?
Also question: is detachable side plates safe enough, in case of shock on pothole or speedbreaker hump? Will not detach undesirably?
The chrome 'bar' behind the SR400 seat is a grab handle for the passenger, a job performed by the seat strap on the photo of the Harley. There are luggage racks on the market similar to the one shown, which don't need a backrest, I had one on my Dyna for many years. I actually bought it at a Harley dealer, although I don't believe it was a H-D branded item.
Another option is get the one pictured and remove the pad, just keeping the chrome backrest piece in place. The PO of my 1200 did this and I like it. Gives a good minimalist look. Since I ride solo I'm not concerned at all about the backrest pad.

You will need the side plates to support the rack. To hold the rack in place without the sissy bar all you will need is some square stock.
The detachable side plates will not come off when hitting bumps in the road. I have the sissy bar on my 2017 XL1200T.
If you still have a legal number plate it will be about 1/2" too tall. My dealer wanted to sell me the leaning over license plate holder but I would just source a different number plate.

The seat strap on my original XL 1200 R is purely decoration . I would not recommend a passenger to use it as a means of staying on the bike .
That strap has been around on many brands since I started riding in the '60s and you're quite right, nothing has changed since then - the darned things are only decoration!
