Just got it today: 06 and 07 XL1200L and 07 XL1200N born between October 31, 2005 and May 16, 2007. I got the notice in the mail today.
Turns out there is a chance your jeans will catch on fire from the exhaust and they want to install part number: 66851-07. Some sort of heat shield. They state that the recall kit parts where shipped July 2, 2007 to dealers.
You probably won't find the part listed since it is a part used for recall installation.. my 1200N was born on 02/07 but I haven't got a recall for it.
My wife's 1200L is getting the new heat shield today. I called the dealership yesterday to have them put it on. Luckily her bike is in the shop now being dyno'd and having the 1k service done, so her bike won't have to make another trip up there. We laughed as we read the recall because she had her pants burn a few weeks ago. There's a giant hole in a pair of her jeans. They were glowing red when we pulled into a gas station. I blamed her and told her that she needed to get her leg out further away from the exhuast. I got a "Told ya so!" when we read the recall.
Any chance you can post some pictures or other information after you get the work done? I am interested in understanding what the new shield is like......
Not a problem. Her bike should be ready to be picked up today, so I'll ask them what the difference is between the old heat shield and the new one. I'll let you know what I find out. If the new heat shield looks any different, I'll post pictures of the differences.
I got my letter yesterday.....I'm kinda chubby, and I wear baggy pants most of the time....I can't even feel the heat on my bike usually. I'm not sure how my pants would catch on fire......but that would defiantely suck if it did!!
I actually burned the very edge of some boot cut jeans I wear. More of a scorch than anything. But nothing I would want some big gaudy heat shield to remedy. I am aware of it now and just periodically look down. I too would like to see the after pics. I will have the work done if they will let me keep the OEM heat shield I can replace. If not, and the heat shield takes away from the look I have now, I will ignore it. When I first saw I had a recall, I figured it was for less than water tight relays or fuel pump issues. Not heat shields.
Took my 07 1200L for the 1K service yesterday morning. Came home to find recall notice in mailbox.
Called dealer and picked it up today with all service + recall + free detailing.
