You would want one with the side mounting bosses most likely and have to make a mount.
The engine guard mounting locations would be a likely place.

Here is a Sportster with a center mounted cooler:

For searching use google but try adding site:hdforums.com at the end of your search string.
Good advice, you sir win the 'helpful member of the day' award. I use my G9 Note almost exclusively and the search feature on these sites is not possible with a touch screen. The down screen comes and goes too fast not allowing data to be entered into the field. Bypassing it with Google and adding our Forum site is brilliant.....thanks for sharing that.

You guys are awesome. I’ll ride this summer with an oil temp gauge and see if I need the cooler. I’ll be putting in redline 20W-50 to start the spring and then moving SAE 60 when the summer starts to heat up.

i want this engine to last . Snow stopped me from riding today but I’ll be riding the rest of the weekend . Thanks guys

"Normal" oil temperature (per the HD Service manual) is 230 F

I started looking through my manual for temperature and all I can find is "ensure the engine is at normal operating temperature" or similar. Not until section 3 on checking oil pressure does it eventually give up what that temperature is.

"For an accurate reading, engine oil should be at normal operating temperature: 230°F (110°C)."

In that case, my bike did really need a cooler because in the SIDE oil tank I regularly see around 230* when stuck in LA traffic. So if it's 230* on the side, I assume that it's higher in the engine. FWIW, my bike is still stock.

I agree with you, hanging off the side is ugly. If you looks at the M8 bikes theirs is mounted front and center, and that is where it should be, IMHO.

A bracket should not be that hard to fabricate. The only thing I would suggest is using clamps to hold it to the downtubes as opposed to drilling holes.

And yes some parts of SoCal are easily Arizona hot, not to mention traffic jams at even lower temps are just as bad. I am thinking of one with a small computer type fan on it as well. Oil breaks down sooner at excessive temps, so lower oil temp is better, especially when over 200*.

Its funny those that claim these "normal" temps are fine but have no issue changing to stage one in a heartbeat, because "stock sucks".

Some Sportsters can definitely benefit from an oil cooler. A vertically mounted one, (like pictured below)and linked HERE, can be very effective at keeping the temp of the oil down around 230 on bikes that regularly run hotter than that. I personally like to see my oil temp peak out about 210*. If the oil at the tank is not going above 210 degree, little, to no, benefit will be seen from adding an oil cooler.

Running an oil cooler between the downtubes reduces the air flow to the engine, AND, the air flow it does get is heated up from the transfer of heat from the oil cooler.

I know, Harley M8 Softails run like that...but contrary to some thinking, Harley does NOT always do what is best.

On a Sporty, it is not so much a matter of blowing the engine up or not, but it definitely affects performance and longevity. More info on the optimum engine temperature can be seen HERE.
