Default Oil cooler

So I’m trying to figure out if anyone makes a center mounted oil cooler for a 2018 883 iron. If they don’t make it has anyone fabricated a center bracket or is it even possible. I just don’t like the look of the side mount.

also how on earth do you narrow down the search function. I tried “oil cooler”, “oil”+”cooler”, centered oil cooler and all that would come up was forums on oil and random stuff. Is there a search forum where they teach new people how to search for stuff. It doesn’t seem to follow normal google rules.

Most of the ones Ive seen are from Jagg and are mounted on the left side down tube on the frame. Where do you live that it's hot enough to consider an oil cooler? I can see it on a big twin but an EVO is resilient and unless you live in AZ or a state like it I personally wouldn't be concerned.

Surely a centre mounted oil cooler will be self defeating because it will impede the flow of air over the front cylinder thus reducing the flow of cooling air . I think people worry too much about the heat that is given off by Harley engines . If you are concerned about accelerated wear in very hot conditions , use the recommended grade of oil .

I live in Southern California where I see summer temps near 120. That’s why I’m thinking about it. I was going to just run SAE 60 in the motor but then someone recommended I look into an oil cooler. I just don’t like the look at all.

Jagg makes a horizontal cooler that installs where the chin spoiler goes, i.e. it's not a side mount. I don't think it's a straight fit onto the sportster though.

Welcome to the forum. Remember, Harley tests their bikes under all conditions, summer heat especially. Think about it. Not a lot of bikers out in freezing weather, but lots out in the summer. I'm sure they know that as well. After more than 60 years making Sportsters, if they needed a cooler, they'd come with one.

I've never read one single post on this forum, or over on xlforum.net, where someone had a temperature related engine problem. Not even on converted bikes, unless some build error is involved. It may happen, but I have never read of one. I think you should save your money. I've ridden my 883 almost 30 years now in hot California weather and never had any concerns about engine temperature.

John

The first time I got stuck in traffic on my Sportster I have to admit that I was horrified at the heat coming off the engine . I've owned quite a few big cc air cooled bikes but this was at another level . Then it occurred to me , the heat was coming OFF the engine and all those big beautiful cooling fins were doing exactly what they were designed to do .

I'm in Dallas, Texas and it gets hot here too. 2007 Dyna (101,500 miles) NO oil cooler, NO problems. Wife's 2004 XLH 1200 Custom, NO oil cooler, NO problems. 1977 XLH 1000, Lockhart oil cooler, NO problems (it's an Ironhead Sportster and it runs HOT all the time.)

Yes it is possible. Jagg offers the coolers separately from the kits and has detailed drawing available.

You would want one with the side mounting bosses most likely and have to make a mount.
The engine guard mounting locations would be a likely place.

Here is a Sportster with a center mounted cooler:
