Default Engine VIN Year Model ID

Hello, I just picked up a sportster for cheap and I'm trying to figure out the year model of the engine. The frame is an aftermarket rigid frame. The engine VIN reads, CHPW205515. I did some googling and from what I found the last number 5 means it is a 2005 year model engine. Am I right? Thanks for the help.

If the CH does identify it as a 1200S the year would be between 1996 and 2003 ...

If it is between 1996 and 2003 the W would be 1998 ...

Thanks for the info! I appreciate it. I was having a hard time ordering parts not knowing what year model the engine was.

And the first "number' you have is a 2, which would indicate that it is a Domestic model (meaning it was made for the USA but not for California) and made mid year. The rest of the numbers is like a Check Sum number that is used to verify that the number is a valid number.

Here is a link that lists that lists all that.

I don't think the introduction period can be determined from the abbreviated VIN on the engine case. You would need the 8th digit of the full 17 digit VIN, and the 8th digit is not included in the abbreviated engine VIN.
