Weird shifting issue
I'm new to harley. I bought a 89 sportster that was converted to a 1200 that also happened to be in pieces lol.
I'm a good mechanic but this has me baffled. Also sorry if this has another thread I did like extensively but didnt see anything like this.
Anyways I have my bike all together now and I went to start it and it didnt start. Another issue i have to solve but not what I'm asking about. Either way it wouldn't start so I thought maybe I'll try putting into top gear and try turning in Hope's that itll change something.
then I noticed the issue. Everything is hooked up and tightened down. The clutch lever is pulling the clutch connector but it wont switch gears. I tried loosening it and still nothing. Now here's the odd part. Once I actually started to disassemble I went to drain the oil I just put in and loosened the little clutch nut that u screw through. Now I can switch gears. Has anybody come across this?
Is this correct for your bike?

Why don't you get it started, and then report any issues? When I rebuilt my VW van engine, I could not turn it over by hand when completed, even though I knew all was good. Once I installed it in the van, it turned over just fine, and ran perfectly. I later sold it with 125K miles on that engine (a VW van!!!!) and it was still running like the day I fired it up.
Have you tried Ebay to find a service manual? There's lots of them listed, here's just one:

Have you visited www.xlforum.net ? Lots of older Sportster owners and a wealth of knowledge.
Welcome aboard!
