Default Weird shifting issue

Hello all,
I'm new to harley. I bought a 89 sportster that was converted to a 1200 that also happened to be in pieces lol.
I'm a good mechanic but this has me baffled. Also sorry if this has another thread I did like extensively but didnt see anything like this.
Anyways I have my bike all together now and I went to start it and it didnt start. Another issue i have to solve but not what I'm asking about. Either way it wouldn't start so I thought maybe I'll try putting into top gear and try turning in Hope's that itll change something.
then I noticed the issue. Everything is hooked up and tightened down. The clutch lever is pulling the clutch connector but it wont switch gears. I tried loosening it and still nothing. Now here's the odd part. Once I actually started to disassemble I went to drain the oil I just put in and loosened the little clutch nut that u screw through. Now I can switch gears. Has anybody come across this?

This doesn't make much sense - can you re-phrase?

Is this correct for your bike?

Yes that's the nut I'm referring to. Didnt know its exact name. Also I dont believe I have the spring mentioned in the first link. I'll try this and let u know what the results are. Thanks for the help. Hopefully it's as simply as that

So going forward I suggest you get a proper service manual.

I would agree if I didnt have one. Its lacking in a lot of ways so I've had to rely on the internet. And unfortunately most information on on sportster with the evo engine is all 91 and newer

Since your bike has been down for a while, the clutch plates have probably stuck. Since it's not running I would imagine you would have a problem going through the gears in a static condition.

Why don't you get it started, and then report any issues? When I rebuilt my VW van engine, I could not turn it over by hand when completed, even though I knew all was good. Once I installed it in the van, it turned over just fine, and ran perfectly. I later sold it with 125K miles on that engine (a VW van!!!!) and it was still running like the day I fired it up.

Have you tried Ebay to find a service manual? There's lots of them listed, here's just one:
https://www.ebay.com/itm/Harley-1986...sAAOSwRNFfDbed

Have you visited www.xlforum.net ? Lots of older Sportster owners and a wealth of knowledge.

Welcome aboard!

John
