Exclamation Electronics are dead

2004 Sportster Custom. Riding down the highway, after ~ 50 miles speedometer goes to zero, digital trip meter starts blinking, engine running but very poorly. Limped to a place to pull off, engine still running. Shut off via the ignition switch and got off to do a visual inspection, nothing unusual. Turned the ignition back on, everything is dead.

Hauled it home and started checking things out. Battery and battery cables good. Exposed a place on the battery-to-ignition switch wire and the ignition-ON wire. Current to ignition switch is good.

Discovered 2 things that are odd.
1) Ignition-ON lead coming out of the switch is hot regardless of ignition state. Confirmed by checking the fuse box. That indicates to me that the ignition switch is bad, correct ?
2) When I connect the engine casing and the negative battery terminal (via a multi-tester) I get current flow, regardless of ignition state. That doesn't seem right to me.

1st time working on HD electronics so maybe I'm really missing something. Any guidance would be greatly appreciated.

Something very similar happened to my 04 Roadster after touring in the rain for a day . In my case it was a few water droplets inside the eight pin connector under the tank . I suggest that you pop all the connectors and look for any signs of sizzling or traces of moisture .

1st thing to do is a diagnostic error scan. Look up the error code number (Fuel Moto has a list) and know what's not working.

Thanks.

Got the wiring diagrams.

Can't get any diagnostics, The speedometer, lights, etc are dead. Maybe if I had the HD scanning tool.

I still don't understand how there is power to the fuses without the ignition On. Proceeding on the assumption that I have a wire shorted for now.

Because there is a circuit being formed somewhere else . In my case it was water in the 11 pin connector under the tank . I switched off the bike , took out the key and retired to my tent . In the morning the instruments were lit up and the battery was half dead . Here you go . This is all it takes for the bike to go crazy .

Maybe it's something I should look into then . Does it have to be connected to a device ?

Midpegs - There is no device. Check out Fuel Moto website. It's done with the OEM speedometer and the trip reset button.
