Default Looking at doing pipes soon!

It's about time to do the pipes on my 2007 XL 883C... I'm pretty sure I'm going to go with V&H Short Shots, but I spoke with my local V&H dealer who recommends doing the air cleaner (plugging his Arlen Ness line which I love) as well as the V&H FuelPak which he sells. Recommended professional installation as well.

Few questions:
1) Would I be okay to do just the pipes right now? Adding the FuelPak and air cleaner later?

2) Would I be okay to do this myself? What's the hardest part of installing pipes?

3) Am I just crazy?

If you jusy do the pipes you don't need the air cleaner or fuel pack.I put my Straightshots on myself and it was no problem.

you should, imo and that of many others, change out your intake and exhaust at the sametome. due to the efi on the '07 you should get re-mapped at the same time. the reasons are many, do it all together.

It easy, just do it yourself and save some money. If you can read directions, you should have no problem at all.

Just a footnote. If you install slip-ons, be very carefull with the crossover gaskets. They are fragile and the packing can break.

Shortshot installation is not hard. I did a wrietup of a couple notes from the installation process -- if you search you can probably find it.

I did just the pipes -- waiting to rejet and add the air cleaner later. My bike runs fine... and i think you would be fine doing just the pipes for now. If the intake stays the same, the AF ratio should stay the same, regardless of the amount of backpressure from the pipes.

Also --with shortshots there is no crossover -- so don't worry about the crossover gasket.

This answered the question I've had for a while, as well. My bike is still stock, just bought it a few weeks ago. Love the shotgun pipes but I was worried about the backpressure change if I didn't change the carb. The bike already idles quite high, I need to fix that first before I start doing too much.

My next project will be pipes. (Tonite I am putting on my sundowner...)
Sorry if this question was addressed already---
I have been doing alot of reading / and talking to fellow riders, and there is a definite split between whether I should go with full pipes or just slip ons. Is the difference just asthetics, or is there more to this?
Also, some say jetting the carb is a must, others say no.
A note, I want more presence than the stock pipes but I don't want to blow away the neighborhood, either.
I met a guy who had V&Hstraightshotson his '07 sporty and he took out the baffles.Christ, I don't want to be that loud...
Appreciate any input!

Are you sure you'll have enough time to get that seat installed tonight????? That's more of a weekend project...

I don't think there is any real performance advantage to full pipes vs. slipons .. the only real differences are looks and sound. That is unless you are thinking of going to a 2 into 1 exhaust, which can be tuned for better performance than a 2 into 2 system.

As far as installing pipes before jets and intake -- you can do it.. but you won't see any performance gains from it. You will get a better sound though.
