Default Throttle cable change question

Hi,

Just adjusted my throttle cable on my 2016 Iron and found it is at the end of its adjustment so needs replacing very soon. The Clymer manual says I need to cut the cable ties then remove the tank so I can get new ties around the new cables. My question is it possible to feed the old cables out without cutting the cable ties then feed the new cables through the ties so I don’t have to remove the tank?

Apologies if is this is a dumb question - I’m a Sporty, and in fact an HD, newbie, so I’m just getting to know how the thing is put together - and taken apart!

Thanks for any help, Andy

I removed my front bolt on the tank and lifted it up, pretty sure you need the room. I didn't cut any wire ties, though it would have made it easier, maybe, but I think leaving them helped hold the cables for me, a little tight for the second cable, but doable.

Ok thanks. I might just try first by just lifting the front and see if I can wiggle it in. Can’t see why it shouldn’t be possible, especially with the Arlen Ness Big Sucker filter back plate, which gives more space to get at the cable ends than the stock filter

Thanks again, andy

Kinda hard to believe a 5 year old cable would stretch to the point it needs to be replaced. What made you think the cable needed to be adjusted?

My thoughts. I have over 104,000 on my 2007 Dyna with the original throttle cables. Mind you, I converted it from EFI to a CV-40 then CV-40 to a Miluni HSR 42. They still work perfectly. WHY DO YOU NEED TO REPLACE THEM?????? ADJUST BOTH OF THEM CORRECTLY.

Thanks guys. Well I just adjusted it the way the manual says and noticed that it is adjusted about as tight as it can go with the barrel adjuster. Did seem a bit weird that it has stretched like that with only 14,000 on the clock.
Seemed fine when I test rode it afterwards. I’ll double check my setting today to make sure.

Thanks WKNDS for that. Good little clip - I’ll go and try it that way later today. Andy

I managed to change both throttle cables without cutting the cable ties. I did have the tank off when I did the job as I was changing them plus the wiring to a longer length for new bars.

Ok that’s them done again as per the Clymer manual. Only thing different was I used a scissor jack stand this time instead of the jiffy stand to get the bike up and straight. Not sure if I turned the steering “full right” while doing the idle cable last time but, as that is done second, it shouldn’t have affected the outcome.
The “pull” cable is a little bit better this time - probably 2 full turns from full adjustment instead of on the limit. Feels really smooth too - I took the opportunity to oil them while I had it apart.

Anyway, thanks 🙏 to you all. Good to know there’s someone there when you need help. Guess that’s what it’s all about being a biker eh?
