Thanks for the forum add. Just got my first harley, a 2006 sportster 1200 a few months ago.10k miles. At first I loved the bike but im having issues with it and im at my wits end trying to track down whats wrong with it. a bit of a long post so bare with me
2 weeks ago (saturday june 25th) my battery light was intermittently coming on during a ride. I lost power while 30-40mph, then the bike just came back alive fine. A few mins later it died while turning on to a side street. The bike would turn over but would not start. 3-4 times trying to start it I lost all power and had to walk the bike home. Got it home, found out the battery cables were loose so I tightened them up and the bike fired right up.
The next day (sunday june 26th) I started the bike up, let it idle and left for a ride. Made it 3 blocks , the bike sputtered and died. Got it home and 30 minutes later it fired right up.
fast forward 2 weeks. replaced the battery, added a tender, new plugs, new air filter, new petcock and fuel filter, and new voltage regulator. The bike seemed to be running a little better but its still sputtering and back firing after 3-4 blocks. no check engine light, it starts up fine, battery voltage is 12.5 with key on, goes up to 14 with bike started and throttle.
Im at my wits end and kinda tired of throwing parts at it. Anything I could have missed that I should check?
update. friend came over to check his work out. adjusted the idle screw and its running better. i feel alot better about it than i did earlier. but theres some noise coming from the primary that makes me pause. it wasnt that noisy before. something to keep an eye on
The problem with the way it's running could be a dirty carb which would run inconsistantly. Did it sit for a long time before you bought it? It sounds like it hasn't been maintained in the past. If you aren't experienced at working on bikes and don't have a repair manual, take it to a dealer for a full service. The sound from the primary could be low on oil in the primary or primary chain out of adjustment.
