I picked up a spanner wrench from the local indy that looks like the one in the link below. I haven't had any problems with it on either HD shocks or Progressive 412's. I did put a strip of electrical tape on the inside face to help keep the wrench from scratching the shock.

Note: I don't know if the wrench in this link isforHD size shocks, it's just a picture of what mine looks like and it only takes 1 wrench for the HD shocks. The same style wrench also came packaged with my Progressive 412 shocks.

cHarley, now why did'ntI think of that. Electrical tape on the inside face of a spanner (wrench). Its so simple its brilliant. Seriously, I would never have thought of it, but its a very useful tip, thanks.

Mine looks like the one you are showing, I bought mine at a dealership, however it is Drag Specialties brand and I have never had a problem. Use it all the time, the wife loves going riding, so I am always adjusting the shocks between solo and two up, never had a problem with the wrench.

I picked up a wrench from the dealer a few years ago - the part number stamped on it is 84448-82 and never had any problems adjusting the pre-loads on either my '05 or '07 1200C. Maybe they changed the design when they added the A to the end of the part number.

I've seen other posts with people having problems adjusting their pre-loads. Sometimes, it they just aren't finding the right place to grab with the spanner wrench-it fits the thin ring at the base of the springs (it's about the same thickness as the spanner wrench). Scratching is a problem if you try to turn the wider chrome part at the bottom of the shocks.

Same here.............the radius of the tool was too big to keep the peg in the shock notch when adjusting...................took a file to it and made it the right size. Shouldnt have to though seeing its supposed to be a genuine part. Just wonder if the rest of their stuff is made with the same attention to detail.............

I did some filing on the radius and got out the welder, and added a little steel to the notched end, and filed it to fit the square notch on the shock..

Fits alot tighter and doesn't slip when pulling on it.
