Default 1989 sportster gearbox removal

Hi all,
after a minor crash 4 month ago, I’ve been working to fix my 1989 sportster 883.
im a certified YouTube mechanic means I don’t really know what I’m doing and I’m learning while doing it several times…
at first I replaced a torn clutch cable and the shifter linkage by some guidance here in this forum, just to find out I can’t shift gears and it’s stuck on first gear.
I got everything out of the way however I can’t find how to take the gear out.
I removed the bolts but not sure what next, attached is a short video of the loosen shifter and a picture of the gearbox.

any help or guidance appreciated

1. Get a factory service manual for your bike and that will show you the procedure for removing the transmission through the trap door.
2. YouTube videos are okay but there is a lot of misinformation in them also.
3. I think there is a retaining clip that needs to be removed. See below.
4. I am going to send you a private message that may help you out.

NOTE:
The above information, while credible, is worth what you paid for it and should not be considered gospel.
Do due diligence, research and have a H-D Field Service Manual before working on your bike.
You will probably have many opinions and suggestions presented; make sure you research the person providing the helpful information as there are some who provide good information that is useful and some who speak out of other orifices with gibberish. You will figure out this quickly.

You should be able to tap it out from the other side, I assume you removed the trans sprocket and chain.

Thanks everyone, i didn’t remove the sprocket, going back to the beginning, i read the owners manual leading to chapter thirteen and removed the cover as seen in the picture attached, as it’s too dark now I’ll have to continue tomorrow but from what I understand I need to remove the Socket lockscrew and then turn the sprocket nut clockwise.

my question is, when I will turn it won’t it turn the belt and the wheel?

Yep, it will turn the wheel, use your brake to hold it in place. From the looks of your belt, it may need to be replaced also.

May also want to spray a little penetrating oil on the shaft & nut to sit overnight.

There is a special tool for this but it's expensive. The brake/hold method works just keep your face away from the belt. I could never get this nut to budge without an impact wrench.

If you've still got this apart, take a look at the magnets inside the clutch basket. There's some odd marks on your stator and those magnets had a habit of coming loose. If they are all evenly spaced still, you're good to go. Worth checking though.

Still stuck, can’t release the sprocket nut out.
at first I tried manually, then a friend came with a powerful dewalt socket wrench, then we tried to apply heat , tomorrow I’m getting another gas can and a stronger impact wrench.
hopefully this will be the end of it.

Just a side note the Harley manual says it’s released clockwise, any chance it’s not?

it’s been a long time since I worked on a sportster 5 speed but I thought the trans came out leaving the high gear/ sprocket on the bike? Does the manual say you have to remove it? I know the trapdoor is usually very tight on those dowels.

it’s a 4 speed and according to manual unless I’m reading it wrong
