Default '99 Sporty - magnetic speed sensor pick up

I think that the magnetic speed sensor pickup has got some metal shavings that needs to be cleaned. I was riding and the speedo was working fine and then just quit. I have been told that this could be the problem. I just can not seem to be able to locate this on my bike. I know it is on the tranny, but I have looked @ several pictures and what they show - well I have not had any success locating something that looks like the pictures off of a Dyna. Help if you can.

Don't know about your '99, but per the serv manual, the '04+ modles have the Vehicle Speed sensor located "at the top of the crankcase behind the starter"
