Sometimes when I have the bike in neutral the dash light fails to come on.Other times it operates just fine.Occasionally I can have it in neutral and the light will finally come on while I'm sitting at the stop sign.Any ideas out there?I appreciate the help.
I'd start off by replacing the bulb, it's cheap and easy to do. I've seen this happen to a lot of people with some of the indicator lights, basically the filament breaks off at one end, but still swings around in the bulb, and occasially vibrates back up and makes a connection and will light up and seem normal for a while. So I'd start off with the bulb, then from there try to follow the wiring, make sure all connectors are clean, including the bulb socket itself and check for worn or damaged wire insulation, then from there if you really need to you can check out the nuetral switch which I beleive on most of the evo engines is located just under the belt drive pully, but you'll have to pull the pully cover, and possibly the drive pully, i know my 30 tooth pully covers the neutral switch on my bike atleast. Otherwise just suck it up, it's a dummy light, and you don't need it. Heck, if it's sunny out, I can't see and of the indicator lights anyways.
When I took the MSF basic riders course to learn how to ride, the bike I happened to pick out had this problem from the get go. Except it never worked. I guess some bikes just crap out like that. 'Cept the light on that bike would sometimes say I was in N when I wasn't, so it was really bad for a beginner. Oh the other hand, it taught me to never trust that light, so that's a good habit I suppose.
My Yamaha XT dual purpose bike did that once or twice, too, and I don't know what caused it.
usually if i know im in neutral for sure and the lights not on, i rev the engine really fast and the vibration must shake something on and it lights. its not my bulb, i tested that already since it was easy to get to.
i just deal with it, i downshift and the moment im in neutral i blip the throttle and it comes on, its now my normal procedure
by the way, does your oil light come on when you turn the key? for me it goes away when the motor starts. i was just wondering if THIS was normal. i have an old carbed NON-computer controlled bike.
Oil light should come on after you turn on the key and before you start the bike. It is a low oil pressure light. Without the bike running, you have no pressure, which is about as low as you can get. You might notice the same thing when you start a car.

Oil lights are supposed to come on when you turn the key before you start the engine. You'll notice in a car, all the warning gages wil momentarily light up when you turn the key before engaging the starter. This is known as a Power On Self Test or POST.
Usually, if they fail to POST, it's because the battery is dying.
