Has anyone changed out a speed sensor on a 1200 Custom. My speedo and odometer don't work. I ran the code and it came up d02 which is speed sensor power shorted or high open. Just wondering how difficult this job might be.
The speed sensor on the pre 2004 models takes time with an allen wrench. It can be done, tho you will wish you had a ratcheting wrench. Once the bolt is out the sensor can come out, twisting helps, same for getting it back in. The washer may be shot, you may want one on hand before getting the sensor out.
The oil lines are not really in the way of the allen moving 1/8 - 1/4 turn. It takes forever! Then if you forget to twist the little bitch she will sit and I have yet to find a pry tool to reach it. I also used a bit of vasaline to lube the o-ring and it poped in after a little twist. Slack in the cable helps. There should be pleanty of slack from under the seat, just work it thru the zip ties, you may not have to remove the zip ties. Oh yes, you are replacing it, I guess the zip ties can go. An 0-ring should come with the new one.
