Doesn't necessarily mean you did any damage. It COULD do damage if there were to be a small piece of debris in the needle and seat in the carb. or if it didn't close fully for what ever reason. Check your oil level and if it is over full, drain it and refill it with fresh oil and get a good nights sleep.
Give the oil a sniff on the dipstick and see if you detect a fuel smell in it also.
Just make it a point to close the petcock in the future if you're not riding for a while as a precaution.
Funny I went out to check on mine during all the rain this weekend and there was gas running down the side of my tank. I have two caps and the left one was not tight. I am not used to having a cap with reverse threads.
Because of the high heat here in the summer, I am in the habit of running the carb bowl dry before shutting down. I turn off the fuel flow about 1 big block from my house, pull up to the garage door, let the door come up, and idle about 1/2 way into the garage and when the engine starts to miss a little I kill the engine. I will not leave a full carb bowl even overnight. Gasoline evaporates fast leaving a residue within the jets and small passages in the carb. That residue builds and changes the jetting, makes for hard start and eventually will cause non-starting. .......... BC
I shut off my gas and let the bike run until it shuts off. I also put steel wool into the ends of my pipes as my dealer has heard of mice climbing up into the pipes and nesting.
