You're missing the cam position sensor. Looks like someone cut it off.

On a 1997, the ignition module is under the left side cover, under the seat. It connects through the harness to the cam position sensor, among other places.

It looks like this:

The timing plug is missing, and there appears to be debris accumulating in that area, you have to wonder what has passed through that opening while the plug was missing.

Looks like you need:

32400-80B Sensor Plate (Still Available!) $85.99 at Ronnie's HD
Timing Rotor (or clean yours up?) Obsolete, but probably available somewhere. There probably is an aftermarket version.
Timing Plate Studs (2 needed) also obsolete, but probably available

Is your ignition module still on the bike? If they took the sensor, they may have taken the module as well.

If they did you can just get an integrated module that all fits in the place where the timing sensor plate is supposed to be. Check to see if you have the original ignition module before you waste your money on the sensor plate.
