Default Replace the voltage regulator ??

Hi all

I have FINALLY got the customs finished off. Picked the bike up yeserday from my Harley guru and rode it 100 km home.(about 80 miles I guess)

It rode great and all was well.

Now, I rode it about 1 mile to the local store, and when I came homw I needed to adjust the mirrors, so I lturned the bike off and left the key in the on position for no more than 5 minutes. The bike then wouldn't start due to a flat battery, and when I checked the voltage, even after getting the bike jump started, the battery was losing voltage while running, and didt have enough power to move the bike, it just cut out. Now the battery is BRAND NEW so there isnt a problem there, and if it was a car I would say it was an alternator problem, so am I to assume that the voltage regulator is not doing it's job ?

The battery clearly is not self charging, and the regulator is stock, so its about 9 years old, being a 1999 Sportster. Is it time for a change ? I would just take it to my guy, but I have spent way too much already, the tow alone costs $180, so I thought I would ask you knowledgable chaps if simply fitting a new voltage regulator will fix the problem, or if therecould be any other demons at work here...

Thanks for the help

- you will need to have a multimeter to do
the tests to determine where is your charging fault.

- mine turned out to be the regulator (as confirmed
by the Regulator Bleed Test).

- btw , get a HDservice manual , very good.

cheers
.

On my 97 Sporty it turned out to be the stator, hopefully yours will test out to be the regulator as it is easier to get to and change.I did the stator my self and it wasnt that hard but you have to remove the primary cover to do it.Either way do the tests and good luck.

Thanks guys for the help. I really hope it is the Regulator, That bike has been pulled apart more times than a parts shipment from Columbia.

Sir Thruster, mate thanks heaps for the offer, looks like that meet up is still not gonna happen for another week at least. Here's hoping. Its a beautiful day today Tambourine Mtn will be perfect up there, lemme know how the road goes...

The tour is going well, we have picked up a few regular spots and the vibe between bands is amazing. Newcastle on Australia Day was messy...it's a rough old town that one. Played The Sands at Maroochydore on Thhe Sunny COast on Friday and backed up last night at Milton...Gold Coast fisho's Tavern next Saturday, we puull a pretty good crowd down there...We are playing the Zoo on Feb 22 Friday night, if you like I can put you and yours on the door list; it doesnt get much better than The Zoo in Brissie as headliner on a Friday night, probably our biggest Brissie show yet really, so lemme know if you are keen and I can get you the VIP treatment. Mate, with any luck the bike will be paid for in full by the end of the door on march 29. Here's hoping anyway. Thanks for asking mate. We definitely have to catch up soon, and I will get some pics to you as soon as I am RIDING and not PUSHING the thing. Looks amazing. More Chrome than the Silver Surfer's ----. Mini Apes are coming through Burleigh Bars on Wednesday, then I THINK it shall be done...

For Now.

I'll let you know how I go with the VR.
