While we all face a dead battery at some time or other, I just had to replace mine, not because the battery was dead, but because of the mechanical failure of the + battery post. Unlike HD and most batteries which have solid lead terminal posts, this Drag Specialties battery has hollow lead posts. It uses a "floating" nut inside the post to thread the terminal/cable bolt into.
You can see in pic 1 the good post on the left and the failed post on the right. The second pic shows a side view of the failed post.
Just thought I'd share any maybe save someone else the problem. The only good thing about this deal, is that it failed while sitting in the garage and not out on the road.
So is Drag Specialities going to help you out on this? I bought the HD dry cell a few months back and it was an incredible $80.00 befor the discount!! What kick in the head that was!
I repleced the Wal-mart.... Everstart piece of crap that was on the bike when I bought it..
Autozone I think sells those high quality AGM or Oddessy military grade cyclebatteries for around $61, a buddy of mine was just telling me this week he was picking up one locally. Just thought I would mention it since its a good price.
I just went ahead and replaced it with the new, last year I think, HD AGM battery. $76.95 HD retail list price. P/N 65958-04
Doug4561, this HD is not a dry cell it's absorbed glass mat (AGM). The electrolite is absorbed into glass matting that fills the cavities in the battery so that there is no sloshing of the liquid. You can mount these types of lead/acid batteries in any position, even upside down.
Bought one at Batteries Plus, last month, to replace the original in my 1999. 89.00 out the door. AGM but if BP is 89 79 at the dealer is great, too bad it was Sunday
You got quite abit of use out of that battery I am thinking on replaceing mine every 3yrs,Its on a battery tender when its in storage, I ride almost every day during the riding season.
well don't limit it to the drag specialties batter,y they don't make batteries.......that's a common battery sold under a number of brand names........but yeah with how tight the battery cables on the sporties are, that type of battery mount is bad. Actually the HD battery which I have also has the same mounts, and one is started to split off as well......It's not a fault of the battery but the way the cables hook to it and put too much stress on it. I'm getting a new battery soon that has side mount terminals to lessen the cable stress on the terminals.
Im unhappy with drag specialties my self. I bought a load equalizer module for my bike from them thro the HD shop for running LED tailights. I got it hooked it up(4 wires) easy install, the rears wouldnt light... So I tell the HD shop they say bring it down and they will install it for 35 bux... They say the part is shorted and since they dont know if I shorted it (not easy to do on a module) or it was factory defect they cant honor it. They did try to get DS to replace it but they wouldnt either... BS
74 bux down the tubes. I wont buy anything else from them tho. Hope you get some satisfaction I sure didnt.
