Default Found a 2003 883

I found a sportster for sale. It is covered in dust but looks for all intensive purposes new. Owner has been trying to sell it for over a year and seems motivated. He told me he reduced the price from $7000 to $5000 I am thinking more along the lines of $4000. It has 4500 miles, black, and I think it is a Hugger? What exactly is a hugger? It is the anniversity model 883, he hasn't done anything to it and the only thing I noticed is it seems to be missing the enrichment **** and a battery. Solo seat with pillion. Cast wheels. It really looks nice, I want to see it clean and drive it just for function. It looks relatively new. What do the rest of you think? The kelly blue book is 5170 retail 3470 trade in.

I am assuming it is a 2003 "Anniversary" model.(?)

The "Hugger" is simply a lower-to-the-ground than a "regular" Sportster (whatever that is!). Depending on your weight, the rear may be a little harshin dampening with the shorter travel shock absorbers. As for price (without seeing it - or hearing it), $4K even sounds a like a little too much to me. A friend just picked up an '04 (rubber mount) 883 for $3,800 with 3,300 miles on it and an SE Stage 1 -in excellentcosmetic and running condition. I know he got a deal, but they are out there. IMHO, $5K asking price for a 2003 883 Hugger is WAY TOO high! If you really feel he's motivated, and trust him (not running without a battery and choke - right?), offer him $3,500.00. Also, ask him what was done to it before "storage". If it's been sitting a long while and was not properly prepared, you could have some lurking gremlins. Has it been kept in an environmentally-friendly space? How long since it last ran?

A new battery and choke will run you less than $100 and 5-6 hours of your time to install them and clean it. IMO, for $4K he should be able to turn it over to you in spic-and-span condition and in good running order. Believe me, bargains are out there...
