so when my dad gave me his sporty he told me that he took a metal pipe and stuck it in the in the pipes and hit the other end with a hammer. it definately improved the sound, but i never rode it before the "mod" to the pipes so i don't know what it did to the performance. from the little reading i've been able to do i came to the conclusion that what my dad did destroys the baffles, improves sound, and hinders performance, and can possibly hurt the engine over time (?). my question is, what can i do to keep that beautiful sound, restore the performance, and keep my engine healthy?? get new pipes altogether?? as far as performance, i don't have the money to do any major enhancements i'm just hoping to get back what was lost.

Are we talking about pipes or mufflers here? If mufflers, which ones?
Pipes and mufflers need to provide proper back pressure and reversion of the exhaust. It's not likely that you're getting any benefit from the "pipe-rammed 'modified' pipes" other than noise. I'd swap out to Rush, V&H, Bassani, or Cycle Shack mufflers/pipes, install an aftermarket AC, and rejetto get the benefit in performance. Even if you only get new mufflers you will at least reintroduce the needed back pressure and reversion required to keep your engine happy. You'll also get good sound with any of the above mentioned mufflers/pipes.
awsome, just one more thing, and this is going to sound dumb. what is it to rejet?? AC stands for Air Cleaner?? (i just ordered a new K&N air filter) how much of that is DIY??
