Default Much needed advice on bars

Hoping to get some advice from thse in the know. My son just bought his first Harley, a 2008 1200c. He pretty much broke the bank to get it and knowing how bad the desire tomake some mods can be,I want to help him out a bit with his first.

He lives out of state so we talk and search web sites. Hekeeps coming back to the same bars...Z-bars. I'd liketo toorder andship em to him as a surprisebut want to make sure he'll have everything he needsforputting them on. The ones he mentioned measure at 1/4" inch diameter, width approx. 30" inches ,knurled center-to-center 3.5" inches, center width approx. 14.5" inches, rise 4" inches.

So here's where I need help.

1. Will he have to change cables? If so to what size on which?( not intersted in braided ss right now)
2. Will he need different risersOR is there a riser better suited to the style of the bars?
3. Will he have to do anything different to mount his stock instrument gauge?

Thanks all !

I got them from these guys for 105 shipped

http://www.steelthundercc.com/handlebars.html

But they lied......the bars are not dimpled for stock wiring (like described) and they are almost impossible to internally wire due to their Z's and ruff internal welds.....And if you do internally wire them, you must extend the wire harnesses for both sides....A feat that might be beyond his developing capabilities.

So what I ended up doing was carefully grinding slots in the undersides at each control clamp to allow the wires to escape uncrushed........if you saw it you would understand.....

plus, the actual bar end is too short for the assembled left side grip and controls....you end up with a left grip that has no internal support the last 1.5".....but that too is easily fixed.

Dad, this is one mod that you really need to be present for.......kids tend to get in a hurry and take short cuts....and these particular bars need a couple well placed and executed mods to make them work safely and reliably......once installed propperly he will be the envy of all, so if possible find a way to either assist him yourself or arrange a guy local to him to do it.

Thanks for the details. I agree with you 100%. He'll need to have someone do the install for him. You are right...much envy.

your boy is in touch with popular tastes........once installed he will love not only the compliments, but also the new seating position and added width.....

These bars are going to raise his hands and lean him forward......with the forward controls already on the custom he will be in perfect position and it will effect his judgement to the point he will drive much more agressively and take more risks......I know this from my own instant reaction, and I assure you those bars turnedthis already suicidal old fart into a suicidal old fart on Viagra..........I LOVE those bars but I also know their danger.

Congrats for support your kid.......I tried to give my son my sporty last night and he refused because "bikes are dangerous".

Not sure that I want to hear that..lol... but the boy is arisk taker...albeit calculated. Hell... jumps out of helicopters into the ocean for a living. And drop the old fart stuff bro...I'm 49 and I bet we can hang with the younger breed anyday. Maybe not for long...lol. Hey... riding isn't everyone's thing, so my admiration for your boys honesty.

My kid's a cop and flies airplanes......but he is skeered of scooters......

He finally explained the reason last night.....he related how onHS grad trip he rented a moped and got rear ended in florida and culprit then fled the scene and how ever since then was scared of scooters and those driving cagers near him..........

I understood, but I'm thinking that was over 10 years ago, ya know?

Maybe someday he will ride with me

Being a cop I figured maybe it had something to do with seeing to many bike accidents. As for flying, gotta say I would agree with him...I feel safer in a plane than I do riding. But crash for crash... I'll take my chances on the bike.
