Default Battery?!?!

So yesterday I went to Advanced Auto and bought thier sealed battery for my '01 1200XLC. They told me it was the correct battery for my bike. I installed and rode off. Everything seemed fine. After a couple of hours and a few stops and starts of the bike. I went to turn the bike back on and all I got was a clicking. Then I see smoke coming from under my left leg. I thought my bike was on fire for a second. I get off it and take the battery cover off. What do I find, but the negative terminal on the new battery melting. WTF. What would cause this to happen. I am on my way back to Advanced Auto to get another battery, but what would cause this to happen, is there a larger problem with the bike that I should look into?

Default RE: Battery?!?!

Now I have a new battery in the bike and all I am getting is a click click when I try to start the bike...How am I able to test the starter? Would the bad battery have fried the starter?

I don't understand why you neg post melted. If your starter froze, your main fuse should have blown. I don't know, but keep us informed of what you find.

Do the running lights come on when you switch the key on?

Yes. All lights and speedo. I just pulled the negative cable and am going to replace it. A few people mentioned to me that maybe I had a poor connection when I installed the first battery resulting in the melting...I'm going to try to get this baby running again today.
