I have a 2001 1200 without forward controls. Stock pipes with SE II slip ons. I would like to add forward controls to my bike. I have been looking over what is offered at EBay. Hopeing to save some money. Could you all make any suggestions that might push me in the right direction?
I'm wondering why you feel the need for the forward controls. The later Customs come that way, but likely because if they had mid controls, your knees would be wrapped around your ears -- seat to peg distance very short. If you've ridden one and know it's what you want, well and good. But there is a downside to them. Hit a pot hole and no more using your knees to absorb the shock... it goes straight to your butt. Keeping your boots on those forward pegs bouncing down the road isn't all that easy. You might want to save a lot of bucks and grief by keeping those mid controls and putting a set of highway pegs on your ride. You can stretch out on those long rides and it'll look just as cool. For what it's worth.
ronn39, thats what i did for my 1200R, the adjustable highway pegs give me the best of both worlds. Nice to stretch out, but move them legs back for the twisties.
With the forward controls, and the hit a hole issue just mentioned, I also add that on long highway runs, your thighs begin to litterally BURN - my answer, I put my feet back to the passanger pegs - a bit further reach than I wanted, but I would have been in trouble as for completing the ride without comming up with the idea. What I did find, is that also on long rides, I wanted to strech out even further, or mabey higher, for a position change. I didn't like any of the engine gaurd / highway peg setups I have sean (limmited choices 04-06 - so I made them myself
Now -= I pass the time in Hibernation makin stuff for the bike - good luck
There seem to be several different styles of forward controls offered at EBay. This is what I was hopeing to get suggestions on. WHich style or brand would be better?
Stay away from the junk on Ebay. You'll regret the crappy quailty. If you want Forward Controls, just buy HD Forward Controls. For the money, the HD ones can't be beat!
