Here are the type I have for my '07:

They go right around the stock light mount.
It looks like there is a rigid mount available as well, which would require you to take off the lights.

What year is your bike?

Mine are rigid plates. Do NOT have to take off the lights. Just take the screws out of the taillight bracket, slide it in behind, and re-assemble. Looks much better than the detach on the outside as well IMO. Can't take it off..........as easy though. They probably gave you rigid instead of detachable. You would know if they were detachable because instead of just charging you a 1 arm for the rigid, they take an arm and a leg from you for the cost of the detahables.

Same plate I used on my '07 this past weekend. You SHOULD only have to remove the bolt to the lights to slide the plate behine them. However, both my turn signal lights came off the bolt/posts which made the whole task quite a bit more difficult. If this happens, you will need plenty of excess turn wire play (might even have to disconnect them from the rear assembly, I did) in order to get that damn nut tightened that sures up the light to the post.

Having an extra set of hands will help ya not scratch up the paint on the fender - I had to bend and push my fender around a bit to get everything to line-up just right.

Good luck!

I have an 06 Custom and I just installed a sissybar/upright/plates 2 weeks ago. Mine are the detachable type though, yours appear to be the rigid type. My install was pretty easy, just had to go slow and steady on removing the bolts. The were torqued on pretty good.
