Any input as to what type of towels won't scratch Harley's Pearl Black paint?
The finish on my 1200R seams to get a lot of fine scratches if you just look at it wrong!
I know it's going to happen over time anyway, I just don't want to make the process faster.
Crazy as it sounds an old, worn T-shirt seems to work as well as a micro fibre towel.
Currently I'm using S100 carnauba wax. Perhaps there's something with a harder shell?
Theres no such thing as a clearcoat over black that does not show fine scratces (it happens with all clearcoats but is more noticeable on black or dark colors). Micofiber are pretty good but nothing is perfect and all wil scratch. I only use micorfiber towels when waxing or using a wipedown cleaner but when washing I just blow dry with a shopvac blower vs. towel drying. If not blow drying skip the towels and use a synthetic chamois like the absorber.
I don't worry about the small stuff personally, besides everytime you wax/polish it will fill in the light scratces for the short term anyway.
I use microfiber towels of different types for each job...then wash them afterwards in washing machine, dry without anti-static sheet. Never let them touch the ground. Work from upper painted surfaces like tank,to upper chrome to lower chrome and finally the painted lower stuff. I Also have a huge microfiber mitt that looks like a bunch of noodles and holds water/soap like crazy...wash that with the towels each time too. I dry lightly with clean microfiber towels and then take her for a ride to get the water out of the cracks...what doesn't blow off vibrates into hydrogen and ozygen molecules. Black is tough color to keep looking great....maybe even to keep looking really good. John
bottom line, harley clear coat f***ing sucks and so does their chrome. get used to it, ride the damn thing its called character
I will expain why... the clear coat is a water based from Harley davidson, an attempt to make the enviromentalist happy, and keep costs of production low (most paint shops will be required to switch to a water based clear on all their coats by 2010... for the enviroment... that is why they scratch so easy... not enough hardener... now as far as the chrome... i work with HD chrome on a daily basis and i have to disagree with you... it is some of the best chromeing out there... it DOES NOT want to come off... you take any other part that is chrome and put that against HD chrome in a media blaster... HD will last longer... PROMISE you that!
Yeah, my Roadster is black and it's a chore to keep it swirl-free. I've found that the BEST polishing cloths are cheesecloth. Very soft and absolutely won't scratch if you keep them clean. Just pop into the washer and dryer after each use and they last forever.
