I realize that Harleys come in a crate from the factory to the dealer.I was just wondering how much assembly was required before you had a fully functionimg motorcyle. Do they give some young squid the job of putting it together like it was some Taiwanese Bar-b -Que or would a professional mechanic be doing it.?
It's manditory that a certified tech set-up bikes where I work. We all contribute to uncrating them, but techs set 'em up. Mainly, set handlebars, mirrors and factory windshields. They arrive fairly intact. Of course, fluids should be checked. Bikes go through a "PDI" - Pre Delivery Inspection - a very important process performed on every bike. I've never heard of a bike coming back due to a set-up failure. There's bound to be instancessome where, but not where I work.
The new bikes that come in crates have to have their PDI (mentioned above), tires adjusted, windshield attached, andthey do something with the fuel injection system (I know it has to be hooked up to a fancy laptop). Also, if it has ABS I believe they do something with that too, and of course most importantly.... they set the time on the odometer.
I hope this post wasn't completely useless and was somewhat helpful to you.
Well, when I did my dealership time, I uncrated a few scoots. You would be amazed at the "made in mexico" stickers you have to remove...
But I did mostly break vrod crates.....
