I don't have a hitch on my Ranger. What is the easiest way to get a sportster on a truck bed, and what seems even more difficult, getting it down?

Back the truck up against a hill, (think swale, ditch etc.), and roll it on/off.

i bought a tri-fold loading ramp from HF. Its rated for 1500 lbs and have used it half a dozen times, i ride the bike right up the ramp and roll it off the ramp all by myself.

Alright, these are some good ideas. If I use the a ramp or a wooden plank, what size are we talking and about size angle are we talking about coming off the truck bed?

Exactly. You won't need but a short 2" x 12" to bridge the gap. I have probablyloaded/unloaded my Sporty 100 times by myself. In a pinch, 2-3 of us have just picked up and sat it on the ground......No big deal. One guy steadies it, two sit the rear tire on the ground, then two sit the front tire on the ground.

Alright its going to cost 250 for the hitch. The wooden plank is the cheapest option. My help(friend) says the weight of the bike is going to snap my tail gate off. Somebody with experience please give me the low down.

Uhh.. Sporty's aren't *that* heavy Unless you've got a Chevy LUV with rusted hinges and no support cables, you'll be fine. Just take it slow and make sure the plank/ramp doesn't slip! The wider the better. Honestly, I'd invest in a real ramp. Wood *can* break... (Don't ask me how I know...[:@])

I use a 8'x12"x2" plank with a steel bracket on the end to hook on the bed. I try to find a ditch to put the trucks rear wheel in if possible. Hook the ramp on, line up about 15' from the end of the plank, get balanced and ride it up into the bed. You need to go fast enough to get in the bed, but not so fast that you slam into the back. Be on the front brake as soon as you are almost in the bed, kind of like a carrier landing. It's pretty exciting.
To get it out, back up til your rear wheel just gets over the top of the ramp, hold the front brake and make sure you are lined up with the center of the ramp, get in a good balanced position, ease of the fr brake, have faith and let her go. I have had the front wheel come off about half way down, just be cool, keep it straight, you'll land OK. I've been doing it for years.
If this doesn't sound like fun, find a couple of hefty guys to lift it off.

PS. If your tailgate cables look worn, replace em, they are cheap.
