I have an 05 1200c that I just put V&H straightshots on, my question is once it is warmed up and at idle why would it act like it wants to stall when I crack the throttle. Actually it will do this warm or cold. Thanks in advance for any help.
Just my opinion but sportsters 04-05 had software problems to begin with . It was a timing issue when twisting throttle of idle or idling then thing would pop spit and carry on something terrible . This is easily fixed with a reflash from dealer . However yours may have been fine prior to installing the new exhaust . I suspect it is running lean and may just need to richen up a bit . I installed screaming eagle SE 2 and POS SE aircleaner and it did it worse . I had reflash and richened up the mixture as well as rejet and spitting and popping problem has vanished for good . Just my .02 but you did not say whether or not it did it prior to install of new pipes . If it did not do it it is just probably lean. It worked for me good luck
Yep, the ICM reflash (bulletin M-1162 if I remember right - so you can tell the tech who looks back at you with a blank stare when you ask him about it :-) will re-do the spark advance in the lower RPM's to help the off-idle popping. And re-jetting should be looked in to as well, especially with those V&H. I'd get the reflash first, then tune the carb (turn out the mixture screw a bit, rejet if necessary).
Good luck!
EDIT: One last thought - make sure you don't have an intake leak (which can cause the same thing you're describing). If you or anyone else hasn't messed with the carb, you're probably okay (then again ya never know what might have happened at the MoCo before you got the bike...).
Thanks, Tony. I did a search and found tons of posts but the first few I checked weren't telling me much on the subject so I went ahead and asked. (Hope you guys don't mind, honest, I'm not usually that lazy!) By the way, I'm finding these forums on this site to be very informative.
