I HAVE A 2008 NIGHTSTER AND UNFORTUNATELY, I LIVE IN CALIFORNIA SO MY BIKE IS EQUIPPED WITH SOME SMOG STUFF. MY FIRST QUESTION IS, DOES THE SMOG EQUIPMENT HAVE ANY EFFECT ON MY BIKE'S PERFORMANCE? SECOND, IF I TOOK IT OFF, EVEN THOUGH IT IS "ILLEGAL" WHAT WILL HAPPEN? AND LASTLY HOW DO YOU TAKE IT OFF! IT'S UGLY![:'(]
Got a picture of "it"? Your best bet is to move somewhere else, then have all that crap removed. Bike will probably run like **** though as it's set up to run that stuff. You may be looking at something that no dealership in the world would mess with, and most independent shops probably won't have the software to get the bike to run right.
WELL HELL! MOVING IS OUT OF THEQUESTION LOL! IT HAS NO MECHANICAL OR ELECTRICAL PURPOSE. FROM WHAT I'VE NOTICED, THERE IS OBVIOUSLY SOME SORT OF CHARCOAL CANISTER LOCATED IN FRONT OF THE REAR TIRE AND A BREATHER HOSE THAT GOES FROM THE AIR CLEANER TO THE CANISTER AND ANOTHER HOSE THAT GOES TO GOD KNOWS WHERE. I JUST GOT THE BIKE 2 WEEKS AGO AND HAVEN'T GOT INTO IT THAT EXTENSIVELY. I'M ASSUMING IT SERVES THE SAME PURPOSE AS A CATALYTIC CONVERTER ON A CAR AND IS JUST A WAY FOR THE UNBURNT FUEL TO BE EVAPORATED WITHOUT BLOWING FUMES INTO THE ATMOSHPERE. I HAVE A BUDDY WITH SUZUKI INTRUDER 800 (GOD BLESS HIS LIL HEART) AND HE TOOK ALL HIS SMOG STUFF OFF AND IT DIDN'T DO A THING. BUT YOU NEVER KNOW WITH THOSE FOREIGN OBJECTS. I'M NOT GOING TO MESS WITH THE O2 SENSORS AT ALL CAUSE I KNOW THE BIKE WON'T RUN WITHOUT THOSE. HARLEY WON'T TELL ME HOW TO TAKE IT OFF OR IF I CAN TAKE IT OFF. IT'S LIKE IT'S SOME SORTA SECRET INFORMATION FROM THE GOVERNMENT OR SOMETHING AND IF THEY TOLD ME THEY'D HAVE TO KILL ME! BUY NONE THE LESS, I HAVE A K&N, SOME V&H SHORTSHOTS AND A FUELPAK ON THE WAY TO HOUSE! WISH ME LUCK!
ARE THE NIGHTSTERS THAT ARE SOLD OUTSIDE OF CALIFORNIA HAVE THE SAME SMOG STUFF THAT MINE HAS? CAUSE IF SO, IT VERY WELL MIGHT BE SOMETHING THAT CAN BE REMOVED
Well first off, typing in all CAPS is considered shouting, it's not polite.
Yes you can remove the canister. Once you take it off, you need to leave the input line to the canister open. The return line from the canister gets plugged.
The charcoal cannister has zero effct on the running of the vehicle. It catches vapers that come from the gas in the gas tank. This is where you vent for the tank is. As for taking it off it won't do any good and IF CA starts smog checking bikes like cars you will not pass.
What you can do is get a download, pipes, and exhaust since the bike is detuned for smog reasons. Actually just an aircleaner and download will probably help a lot. i was going to keep my 07 roadster stock, but noticed when I ride at night (air is denser when colder) the bike runs much better since it is getting more air.
