This is the first great riding day since I bought my 1995 Sportster on monday last week. My cousin and I were about to go riding today. I followed him to his house on my bike. It ran great the whole waythere (about 30-45 min ride). WhenI parked it I found that it started to leak oil pretty bad from where the cylinder bolts to the crankcase. So right then I knew I wasnt going to ride anymore but just to get it back home. It was parked for about 1 hour maybe a little longer. When I started it back up to leave it idled great sounded just fine. Then Istarted to ride. The first time I got it to about 2500 rpms it started sputtering and backfiring real bad. I thought maybe because it wasnt warmed up enough so I left it sit for a few minutes to warm up and it still did it. I am really upset about it cause its my first bike and I wanted so bad to finally ride with someone. Does anyone have any thoughts of why it might be running the way it is? My thoughts were that it was sucking air from where the oil leak is but im not sure. Like i said its my first bike andI have never worked on one before. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!
from your name - is it an 883 converted to 1200? You might have blown a head gasket, which isn't ~too~ bad a repair, but takes a good day. how mechanically inclined are you
Think he's on about the base gasket....
Is the oil returning back to the tank, run It and have a look In the tank and you should see signs like swirls of bubbles.
it is an 883 w/ 1200 kit. i am pretty good with working on cars as things like that. but never worked on a bike. i am assuming it is pretty much the same though. although I have never chnged a head gasket on a car I know they are pretty much a pain in the ***. but a bike seems a lot easier to work on since evertyhing is exposed.
the oil seems to be making it back to the tank. and i didnt take notice to any bubbles or swirls either. i cannot go look specificaly for that now cause it is still at my cousins. i didnt want to take the chance and screw up the bike anymore. i will have it back tomorow morining and i will look for those things. thanks!!
