I am close to my 1K service on my 08 Nightster. \\; Should I take it in to HD to have them do the service, or should I do it?
 \\;
I already bought a Wix filter, and Mobile 1 Synthetic 20-50 V-twin oil. \\; What else does the service include at the dealer? \\; I dont think they mess with any other fluids untill 5K service...
 \\;
I asked the service department if I could watch them do the first service, and they gave me a bunch of crap about insurance, and liability of me being in the shop. \\; I am very mechanical, and have all the right tools, I used to be a mechanic years ago...but Im worried that they know some kind of voo-doo majic that I dont know. \\; I have ordered a book on the bike and Im sure it details this kinda of stuff...
 \\;
Any thoughts? \\; Anyone do their own service? \\; I really dont see a need to take it in, but I dont want to make some kind of stupid mistake, because of lack of knowledge...
You also need to change the primary oil= 32oz. Mobile 1 V Twin can be used. \\; Primary drive chain tension, secondary drive belt tension, clutch, lube cables, critical fasteners etc. \\; In short get a service manual before you start and you should have no problem.
I am under the impression that the 1000 mile service has to be done at a dealer for warranty purposes. \\; It has to be put in the system, I was a little late on mine, its 1357 miles from Helena to Kc...
You can most certaintly do your own 1K service if you want. Most experinced riders <\\;ahem>\\; will encourage you to have the dealer do the first service for this reason. They sign off on the bike to the MoCo that they assembled the bike correctly and have done the first service and all is well with the bike. That goes a long way whenever you have warranty work done on it. The choice is yours.
put into the system?? \\; Isnt it ALREADY in the system? \\; My understanding of their "system" is that it is local to the dealership...I was told they cannot access another dealers service info...is that true? \\; If so...who cares if I get into their system(no offense), why so they can send me post cards of when to bring it in for my next service??...all I do care about is proper service of my bike. \\; I have the extended warranty, so Im not really concerned about it crapping out...
 \\;
Many people on here seem to do pretty well servicing thier own bikes...and they cannot require you to bring it to them for service, or anyone for that matter...if something breaks they cant ask you if you brought it into the HD dealership for oil changes, only that you took care of the bike...yea, if they were the last ones to work on it, you might have some recourse against them...but again I dont care about any of that...just want to take care of my gurl!
I can't believe all the crap I'm hearing! What, only the Harley Gods can do the first service?? I think it just adds insult to injury. If the first service is so mandatory for the stealership to do the service, it \\; most certainly be included in the purchase price of the bike! Why is it \\; so important for them to have to supposedly check all critical fasteners along with all the other **** and giggles work they say they do? Are they worried they didn't do something right at the factory?? Maybe it should have been checked at the factory. Nothing in the owners manual states it MUST be serviced at the stealer.. If it's so critical, maybe HD needs better QC!
You don't have to go to the dealer for the service. \\; You just need to save receipts to show that you bought the fluids, and keep a record of when and what you did in order to satisfy the warranty. \\; \\; My dealer provided me \\;with a checklist of everything that is done, so you may want to pick that up to make sure you don't miss anything to keep your warranty in force.
 \\;
That being said, I took mine to the dealer for the 1000 mile service and it actually seemed to run better afterwards. \\; I'm pretty happy with my dealer so far, and don't see the big deal. \\; I must have missed the part that said you are forced to go the dealer for anything after buying the bike. \\; You're free to service the bike however you want.
