I have a 99 sportster. Sometimes when in first gear I'll hear a loud clunk or pop noise and the bike will quit accelerating, like its going into neutral for a second. It only does it sometimes. At first I thought the clutch was just slipping, but I think it has something to do with the transmission. Anyone have this happen? Do I just need to change the fluid or is my transmission going out?
when i first got mine i noticed a really loud clunk
 \\;
when i shifted into first..either from neutral or downshifting..
 \\;
then my dang primary cover gasket started leaking..
 \\;
so..(just a suggestion)..go ahead and get yourself a new primary gasket and some blue locktite
 \\;
and primary fluid...drain fluid take off cover...Check &\\; Adjust \\;Primary Chain Tension
 \\;
get it all back together...(don't forget the locktite!)
 \\;
adjust the clutch per the manual..that's what fixed mine..i get a \\;nice tight click now
instead of that loud clunk..
 \\;
mine is a '95..and had 9,000 miles on it..so it may be time
 \\;
Good Luck

My 97 is doing the same thing. Just as take off occasionally , maybe 1 out of 10 times it will do this little slip then jerk when it actually engages thing. Very disconcerting. It also has developed a problem down shifting all the way into first. I will check it at a stop and it feels like it is in first and then I take off and I am in 2nd or sometimes even in third. I was thinking maybe the shifting forks inside the tranny?
I on board of a answer on this one. If there are 2 of us with the problem someone else must have been through it.
OK, I have the correct amout of fluid in the case. I just change it being very careful to drain all the old out and replace with the required amount. I just checked the primary chain adjustment. It was just beyond the max play allowed, just over 1 half in. I adjusted it down to 3/8" the short spec number. Will see is that does anything.
thanks guys. I'll keep you posted.  \\;\\\\\\;
I went for a 25 mile ride around here on the county roads and had no issues with the slipping in to gear as I started off. I will have to ride a few more times to know if that was the problem. It did seem to shift better as in smoother on the clutch engagement after the shift. I'll post again after I have a few more miles on the adjustment. \\;
