I normally shift from 1-2 @ 20-25, 2-3 @ 35 (I have hit the rev limiter at 65 in 2d), 3-4 at 40-45, and 4-5 above 50, mostly closer to 60. I'll adjust that as situation or desire warrants.
And I've never heard what Tripper suggested, but it makes SENSE! That's a pretty cool thing to know!

I believe the owners manual recommendation are for the "break-in" period.
I have had the same issue...since i'm new to harleys and the sounds they make, it's hard to determine if i'm lugging the engine, being in my break-in period i have prolly been running the rpm's a little high just to keep from lugging it. Good to know there's a rev limiter so i don't break it though.
