Default Leak!

This is an 03 Sportster, I blacked out the crank case by sanding it down and then coating it with stove paint. I taped up the bike rather than remove the casing, and have not taken apart anything more ambitious than the headlight assembly. This fluid is beneath the engine and has been showing up in the same spot consistently against the crank casing, but only after being ridden. The further the ride, the more fluid shows up. I'm not sure if it has always done this or not but it definitely shows up against the black paint. I'm the second owner of the bike and have had no problems with it, the first owner said they had only had regular maintenance done with no problems. Something I should be worried about?

I'd get that fixed. Have you tried to torque the bolts down? I had a small drip and one of the bolts was loose enough to turn 4 times before the wrench clicked. Took care of the problem.

Two things. First, when you took the case off to paint, did you replace the gasket? Second, did you get paint on the inside edge of the case that could cause it to not seal properly?

Take the case off, sand down the inside edge to make sure it's clean, replace the case over a new gasket. Then see if it still leaks. Don't overtighten the bolts. Warp the case, and you're screwed and will have to buy a new one.

Well crap. And to think I passed 'hooked on phonics'. Maybe the paint got to the gasket and ate it a little?

Haha ok guys, thanks. I'll bring it by the dealership and see what they say, seeing as how Da doesn't own a torque wrench. Any recommendations as to a solid, inexpensive one worth picking up?

I'd just go Craftsman, the warranty's worth it.

Torque wrenches aren't covered under the lifetime warranty.

I've owned one for several years and haven't had a single problem however.
